After completing his internship in internal medicine, Dr. Steven M. Silverstein received his training in ophthalmology at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston. Dr. Silverstein then completed his subspecialty fellowship in corneal transplantation and external diseases at the Kellogg Eye Center, University of Michigan, where he also served as clinical professor.

A board-certified ophthalmologist and fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Silverstein is active in a number of professional medical organizations, including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Midwest Cornea Society, the Kansas City Society of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, the Missouri Medical Society, and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

In addition to private practice, Dr. Silverstein serves as an assistant professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Missouri Kansas City Medical School, and clinical professor of Ophthalmology at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. Dr. Silverstein enjoys his work as a state elected city councilman, mayor pro tem, and police commissioner for the city of Lake Winnebago, Missouri. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Truman Heartland Foundation and on the advisory board for the Gift of Life organ transplant organization. He is an ambassador to The Rainbow Center for special needs children. Active in Rotary International, Dr. Silverstein is a Paul Harris fellow in charitable giving. He has published in major medical journals, and lectures extensively around the world.
